Cobourg Reports
Cobourg Jail
(Taken from the Cobourg Ghost Walks Brochure; more info to come)
The King George Inn also known as the Historic Cobourg Jail housed dangerous criminals and a very large number of homeless men, women and children, some with terrifying mental illnesses. There is a large amount of talk surrounding the jail and the many odd things that happen there. Kristen Surette-Davis, a former employee of The King George Inn reported being constantly watched when no one was around and hearing strange voices and noises with no apparent source. One of Kristin’s recollections includes the sighting of a strange looking, older man in old, worn out clothing. Kristen was standing behind the bar when she looked up and the older man was walking towards her. She told the man that the restaurant was not open for another few minutes. He remained standing in front of her, not speaking. She turned to finish whatever she had been doing before the man came and looked up to speak to him again. He walked behind a pole in the building and as she looked for him to walk past the pole on the other side, he disappeared. The most frightening of her accounts include a day at approximately 10 p.m one night at closing time. Kristin and the other employees were cleaning the restaurant section of the inn when they heard a very loud and unexplained noise that persisted for a few, very long minutes. It is described as the stomping, screaming, and shrieking of a very large group of people.
